Overview:

Developmental in nature, the Interpretive Services Intern is an integral member of Golden Spike's Interpretation and Education team and assists in offering a memorable and enjoyable visitor experience. The park commemorates the completion of the nation's first Transcontinental Railroad and explores the many stories that made the engineering feat possible and the transformational effects the project had on the United States and its people. Responsibilities:

The position touches many facets of the visitor experience and the efforts that support operating a park unit. Interns will be exposed to various park business lines, while gaining knowledge of the park’s cultural and natural history. Training and mentoring will be provided in interpretive programming strategies as well as practice and coaching in delivering pre-developed interpretive programs to visitors. As part of the frontline team, Interns will greet and orient park visitors to the available recreation opportunities in the park and surrounding areas. Provide safety and regulatory information, make announcements, maintain visitor/interpretive statistics, and answer visitor inquiries verbally or in writing. Interpretive duties include conducting junior ranger programs and assisting interpretive rangers with the park’s daily ranger lead locomotive demonstrations and delivering different segments of these programs as scheduled. Other interpretive duties include facilitating audience centered experiences and various interpretive opportunities while staffing attended stations. Additional duties may include participating in living history demonstrations (dressed in period costume) and helping with special park events such as Pioneer Day and night sky programs.

Qualifications:

This position requires excellent customer service skills, the ability to enjoy working with individuals and groups of diverse backgrounds (must enjoy working with people). Proficiency with speaking to groups and writing skills are essential. Interest or ability to gain knowledge of regional history, native tribes, the natural environment, and recreation opportunities are a plus. The successful candidate should be excited about Public Lands, public service, and have a desire for learning. Applicants with these skills and are pursuing majors in the following fields will be given first consideration: Outdoor, parks, recreation and tourism and history and cultural resource fields.
